COWS aims to provide the best available,
evidence-based information to the cattle industry in relation to the
sustainable control of parasites in cattle.
initiative’s original scope was to provide the best available technical
information to vets, advisors and farmers about the sustainable
management of worms and fluke in both beef and dairy cattle.
The COWS initiative was started in 2010 with the
publication of a technical guide aimed at vets and advisors. This was
subsequently followed up by training workshops for veterinary surgeons
and Suitably Qualified
Persons (SQPs) along with some farmer meetings.
What were at the time known as
EBLEX (now AHDB Dairy and AHDB
Beef & Lamb) also produced some farmer
facing publications that condensed the COWS
technical guide down to a format more suited to farmers.
In 2012 a core group of stakeholders came together to try and give COWS
a more structured base on which to feed the best available,
evidence-based, information into the cattle industry.
